Possessing a unique beauty and refined acting skills, Ann Dvorak found success in Hollywood at a time when many actors were still struggling to adapt to the era of talkies. Seemingly destined for A-list fame, critics touted her as “Hollywood’s New Cinderella” as she blazed across the screen in the pre-Code classic Scarface (1932). Dvorak’s journey to superstardom was derailed when she walked out on her studio contract for an extended honeymoon, leaving film fans wondering what could have been.
As author of Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel (University Press of Kentucky), Rice explores Dvorak's life and career, and her posthumous re-emergence as a pre-Code darling.
A librarian, archivist, and writer, Rice is also a proud Ebell member. In addition to the Ann Dvorak biography, Rice has authored Mean...Moody...Magnificent! Jane Russell and the Marketing of a Hollywood Legend (University Press of Kentucky, 2021). Rice oversees the Los Angeles Public Library's historic photo collection.
