Join us for a multi-fold experience in honor of Black History Month—a tour, a luncheon and a hearty helping of intriguing history. We are invited to the Wilfandel Club to share what was known in the Jim Crow era as Shoebox Lunches, a custom begun by Black travelers packing home-cooked road trip eats to be able to dine with dignity and in safety as they crossed the country. Now a nostalgic symbol of resilience, we will enjoy a catered boxed meal by Ebell Foodie Friday Zoom veteran Daria LeSassier, in an elegant setting.

The Wilfandel, established in 1947 by Fannie Williams and Della Williams (wife of noted Black architect Paul Williams) is a civic-minded social organization for women within the Black Community—with many shared members and similarities to The Ebell. It is located in an Italian Renaissance Revival clubhouse dating to 1922. Our luncheon will begin at noon, but we’re welcome to come at 11:30am to tour the site that Paul Williams had a hand in renovating in his day.
