The talented Mexican-American mezzo soprano @saturninomezzo is a stand-out Young Artist in LA Opera’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein program, she is all set to grace The Ebell with a concert in our Lounge.

Fresh from roles at Santa Fe Opera and Shreveport Opera, including Carmen and Julia Child in Bon Appétit, you’ll see why Sarah’s remarkable voice and versatility have won her such acclaim.

Women can be extraordinary in many ways — and now, even YOU can be an extraordinary woman by helping to fund the launch of The Ebell Institute , an initiative dedicated to uplifting and acknowledging the contributions of centuries of extraordinary women in our shared history.

Most simply put - the name “100 Extraordinary Women” directly refers to the 100 or more women making a pledge in this campaign, which is an extraordinary act of generosity, philanthropy, and leadership.

100 Extraordinary Women is designed to inspire a minimum of 100 women to become leaders, joining together in support of The Ebell Institute by each making a $1,000 pledge over 5 years ($200 per year; $17 per month). This $100,000 collective gift will sustain The Ebell Institute during its inaugural year and help keep its programs free and accessible to all.

An extraordinary woman believes in the merits of public scholarship, women’s history, education, and historic preservation. All extraordinary women will be honored at a special evening soiree dedicated to their generosity and accomplishment, as well as have their name listed on The Ebell’s website.

The Ebell Institute for the Study of Women’s History (TEI) will spotlight the untold stories of remarkable Los Angeles sheroes— it is founded on the idea that “one cannot be what one cannot see” and therefore seeks to develop public knowledge of both historical Los Angeles women, as well as modern scholars and artists who are trailblazing in their respective fields.

Despite changing attitudes about women’s roles in civic, scholarly, and artistic spheres, women’s contributions continue to be overlooked. Today, only 6% of American monuments honor historical women (UW-La Crosse, 2023) and women comprise less than a quarter of the historical figures taught in K-12 history classes (NWHM, 2017). This lack of visibility has resounding impacts– breeding narratives, bias, and deeply ingrained cultural assumptions.

TEI is an umbrella for six initiatives:

1. A yearly symposium of local scholars, artists, and culture-bearers.
2. Artistic and scholarly residencies supporting new research and creation by women, for women.
3. Open access to The Ebell’s historic collections to local scholars, colleges, and universities.
4. The Living Herstory Free Student Matinee Program, which provides schools free matinee experiences that delve into LA. women’s history.
5. A docent program at The Ebell to provide open access to one of LA’s most extraordinary landmarks.
6. An oral history project that will document and disseminate voices and narratives of 20th-century LA women.
7. And a new podcast!

We are looking for a minimum of 100 Extraordinary Women to support the Ebell Institute and the story of women in Los Angeles. Each woman donates or pledges $1000 over 5 years ($200 per year or $17 per month). To learn more, click the link in our bio.

We are proud to announce our brand new umbrella initiative, The Ebell Institute, which will oversee a multitude of programs, from an annual symposium, docent training & student matinee series, all of which will help develop public knowledge of hidden and unknown women’s history in Los Angeles.

To support TEl in its inaugural year, The Ebell is raising $100,00 - 100 pledges of $1,000 either from or in honor of Extraordinary Women who value public scholarship and women’s history.
