Events: Ebell Field Trip to Hilbert Museum of California Art

from Lizzie Blatt, Director of Publications

August 1, 2021

On Friday, June 18, after the long COVID hiatus, 30 intrepid Ebell members braved the Friday freeway traffic and traveled to Orange County, to the Hilbert Museum of California Art.

The Ebell had received a personal invitation from the museum’s founder, Mark Hilbert, to visit the current exhibit, Los Angeles Scene Paintings.  Amongst the 200-or-so paintings on view – all of which are from the Hilberts’ massive private collection – were four top-tier paintings by Millard Sheets.  Mark Hilbert had attended our zoom presentation by Victoria Loutman on Millard Sheets, whose artwork at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, on Wilshire Blvd, can be seen from the Ebell’s doorstep.

Not only were we honored by a private view conducted by Mark Hilbert himself, we were joined for the show  – and also a delicious lunch – by one of Millard Sheets’ four children, Carolyn Sheets Owen-Towle and her husband, Tom.

The museum will be installing this Millard Sheets mosaic, originally situated at the former Home Savings Bank in Santa Monica. Photo by Peter Leonard
