President’s Message

from Patricia Lombard, 64th President of The Ebell of Los Angeles

February 1, 2021

This month we are celebrating Black History Month and Valentines Day!

There’s good news as we start February. The LA Times is reporting that infection rates are definitely trending down. It seems the hard work of staying home, wearing masks and maintaining social distance is paying off.  That’s a very hopeful trend for us as we optimistically look toward a more normal fall as more people get vaccinated.

Thanks to the efforts of our small but mighty staff and our vigilant volunteer Board and members, The Ebell is holding on. We are hopeful that we will weather this terrible pandemic, while we may emerge a smaller organization, and we are optimistic that we can slowly rebuild our theatre and special events as the pandemic recedes.

Until then we are still closed but there’s lots happening in the Ebell community as you will read in our February E-Magazine, starting with events to celebrate Black History month, always an important part of our annual calendar.

We’ve come this far, but must stay vigilant for our members are our most important asset. To that end, to help you stay safe, I am delighted to invite you to purchase an Ebell mask. A Valentine’s Day treat for yourself or someone you love.

The masks are made of lovely blue linen sourced by Ebell member and clothing designer Beate Kessler-McDermott who commissioned Joyce Zappellini to make them for us. Joyce and her husband Michael own Sew Creative Cafe, a school and shop in Redondo Beach. Joyce made the masks and Michael embroidered our beautiful Ebell logo on the side of the mask.

Health experts are recommending that we wear two masks for extra protection against the new more transmissible variants of COVID-19. Our linen mask will make the perfect covering for your disposable K95 or K94 when you have to go out.

We have a small inventory of masks so let us know if you’d like one. The cost is $25 and proceeds will be re-invested in making more masks! Just email me at or complete the form here and we will arrange delivery!

Stay Safe!
