We’ve updated our Fountain of Honor photograph, to keep pace with modern times!
The iconic Fountain of Honor was built circa 1930 by Henry Lion to commemorate the sons, husbands, and brothers of Ebell members whose lives were lost in WW1. The photograph in the original poster, below left, was taken circa 1930-35.

Few people know that the fountain was designed from the image of a real live model, Juliet Carnegie Montague Butts. Here are her two daughters posing by the fountain, seventy years later, in 2000.

Text reads: “Back in 1930, a young woman by the name of Juliet posed for Henri Lyon [sic], who had been commissioned by The Ebell of Los Angeles to do a statue honoring women entitled ‘Knowledge and Wisdom’. On January 24, 2000, Shannon Silverman and Virginia Kelley helped The Ebell honor their mother Juliet Carnegie Montague Butts, who had posed for the statue.”
